I want to pause and explain one critical detail about the whale hunt I just described—a detail most landmen never understand, and most whalers never stop to question.
There’s an unwritten, universal rule in every whaling fleet out on the open sea.
When a whale boat shoves off from the main ship, the boat’s chief killer, the headsman, takes the stern to steer. Meanwhile, the harpooneer—the man tasked with sticking the whale and securing the line—takes the front oar, the one we call the harpooneer’s oar.
Most people think the harpooneer only has one job: hurl the harpoon.
They’re wrong.
“The harpooneer pulls harder than any man in the boat, every single chase,” an old seasoned whaler once told me.
To land a whale, you need sharp, explosive strength to drive that first iron deep into its flesh. On a long-distance throw, that heavy harpoon has to fly twenty or thirty feet true.
Yet no matter how tiring, how draining the chase becomes, the harpooneer is expected to row at full power nonstop. Worse, he’s supposed to be the crew’s example. He has to row harder, faster, and louder than everyone else.
He’s expected to roar bold, fearless shouts the entire time, even as every muscle in his body burns and strains to the breaking point.
Any man who’s tried it knows how impossible that truly is.
You cannot scream at the top of your lungs while pushing your body to absolute exhaustion. The two things fight against each other. Your breath splits thin, your arms shake, and your focus frays apart.
Still, that’s the position we force every harpooneer into.
Back arched away from the whale, muscles cramping, lungs burning, he rows until he’s worn thin.
Then the cry cuts through the noise: “Stand up! Strike him now!”
In that split second, the exhausted man has to drop and lock his oar, spin halfway around in his seat, snatch his harpoon from its rest, and summon every last shred of drained strength to nail the shot.
Is it any wonder we fail so often?
Out of fifty perfect opportunities to strike, barely five land true.
Is it any wonder worn-out harpooneers get cursed, disgraced, and demoted for bad shots that aren’t their fault?
Is it any wonder some men burst blood vessels mid-chase, collapsing from the brutal strain?
Is it any wonder some crews sail for four long years and return with barely four small barrels of oil to show for it?
Plenty of ship owners call whaling a losing, useless trade.
And they blame everything but the truth.
The harpooneer makes or breaks every voyage. Wear his body ragged, steal his breath and strength before the critical moment, and you cannot expect him to perform miracles when the whale finally rises.
People never see that fatal flaw.
There’s a second dangerous mistake in our standard tactics, too.
When a harpoon strike lands true and the whale bolts, every boat erupts into chaos.
The headsman and the harpooneer scramble madly fore and aft across the rocking boat, risking their own lives and everyone else’s.
They swap positions mid-chase. The steering headsman rushes forward to the bow, taking over as the main striker, while the worn harpooneer falls back to the stern.
I’ve sailed with dozens of crews from many nations, and I’ll say it plainly: this system is foolish and completely unnecessary.
“What’s the sense in wearing out your best striker before he strikes?” one veteran captain once asked me, and he was exactly right.
The headsman should stay at the bow from start to finish.
He should throw the harpoon and drive the killing lance. He should never be made to row at all, save for rare, obvious emergency situations every whaler can recognize.
Yes, this might cost us a little speed during the chase now and then.
But after years of watching hunts succeed and fail, I’m certain of one thing: most lost whales are not lost because the beasts swim too fast.
They escape because we exhaust our harpooneers before the decisive moment.
If you want a perfect, deadly harpoon strike, your striker must rise ready and rested.
He must stand up from stillness, not from brutal, body-breaking toil.
