For six thousand years‑and who knows how many millions of years before that‑giant whales have been blowing spray all across the oceans.
They’ve been showering and fogging the deep‑sea waters, like thousands of garden sprinklers spraying mist everywhere.
For centuries upon centuries, thousands of whalers have hung right beside these living fountains.
They’ve watched those clouds of spray shoot up again and again.
All of this has gone on, and yet, right down to this exact moment‑one fifteen‑and‑a‑quarter in the afternoon, December sixteenth, 1851‑people still cannot agree.
Is what the whale blows out actual water? Or is it nothing but steam?
That really is something worth thinking about.
So let’s dig into this question, along with a few other curious facts that go with it.
Everybody knows regular fish breathe using their special gills.
They take oxygen straight out of the water they swim in.
A herring or a cod could live its whole hundred‑year life and never need to poke its head above the waves even once.
Whales are completely different.
They have real lungs, just like humans, built deep inside their bodies.
They have to breathe plain open‑air from above the water surface.
That is why they must keep coming back up to the top of the ocean over and over.
A sperm whale cannot breathe through its mouth at all.
When it swims normally, its mouth sits at least eight feet under water.
Worse still, its windpipe does not connect to its mouth in any way.
It only breathes through the blowhole on top of its head.
I believe I am correct when I say breathing exists for one simple reason.
Your lungs pull something essential out of the air.
That substance mixes with your blood, and keeps you alive.
I might throw in a few fancy scientific terms, but that is the core idea.
If a human could fully charge every drop of their blood with oxygen from just one single breath, you could clamp your nose shut and go for ages without taking another breath.
You would stay alive, with no need to breathe.
That sounds strange, but that is exactly how the sperm whale works.
When it dives deep down, it can go a full hour or longer without drawing in even one tiny bit of air.
Remember‑whales have no gills.
How do they pull this off?
Tucked between its ribs and running along both sides of its spine lies a tangled, complex mass of blood vessels, twisted like thin noodles.
The second the whale leaves the surface, these vessels swell completely full of oxygen‑rich blood.
Down in the dark ocean, thousands of fathoms below the waves, it carries this stored supply of life inside itself.
Much like a camel crossing dry desert lands, holding backup water inside its extra stomachs.
Scientists have confirmed this weird network of blood vessels really exists.
And this theory makes perfect sense when you watch how stubbornly sperm whales finish out all their breaths after coming up.
Here is what I mean.
Leave a sperm whale alone.
Every single time it rises to the top, it will stay up for exactly the same length of time.
Suppose it hangs around eleven minutes and blows seventy separate sprays‑seventy full breaths.
Every time it surfaces again, it will hit that same count of seventy breaths, almost down to the minute.
If you scare it halfway through that cycle, it will dive.
But it will keep popping back up again and again.
It has to finish its full set of breaths, topping up its internal oxygen storage.
Only after all seventy breaths are done will it finally dive and stay down for its whole long dive.
Different whales have their own personal numbers for this cycle.
But each individual whale sticks rigidly to its own rhythm.
Why else would it keep coming back, unless it was filling up its internal air tank before its big dive?
And this need to keep surfacing is what makes the whale so vulnerable to hunters.
Out thousands of fathoms deep, no harpoon, no net could ever catch this massive beast.
Hunter, your victory is not so much from your clever skill.
It comes from the whale’s own body forcing it to return to the surface.
Humans breathe non‑stop.
One breath only powers a couple heartbeats.
Asleep or awake, you have to keep breathing, or you die.
A sperm whale only spends roughly one‑seventh of its time breathing.
People say whales breathe only through their blowhole.
If that spray really did carry water mixed in, I think we would understand why whales seem to have almost no sense of smell.
Their blowhole is the only thing on their body comparable to a nose.
If that opening kept getting flooded with both air and seawater, smelling would be impossible.
But since we still argue whether the spray is water or steam, we cannot say for certain.
We do know sperm whales do not have proper smell organs.
Though what would a whale need to smell out in the ocean anyway?
There are no roses, no violets, no fancy perfume floating around under the sea.
The whale’s windpipe opens only into the passage connected to its blowhole.
This long channel runs horizontally just under the top of its head, off a little to one side.
It has built‑in valve‑like shutters.
These close tight to hold air inside while diving, and block seawater from flooding in when it comes up.
Because of this setup, whales have no real voice.
Unless you count that deep rumbling noise they sometimes make, and decide that is them “talking through their nose.”
Though what would a giant whale even have to say?
I have rarely met any deeply thoughtful creature that rambles on to the world, unless it is forced to chatter just to survive.
Oh well. Lucky for us the world is such a good listener.
This blowhole passage is mainly built for moving air.
It stretches several feet sideways just beneath the whale’s scalp.
It looks a lot like a gas pipe laid along a city street.
The big question remains: is this pipe also a water pipe?
Is the spray just damp steam from its exhaled breath?
Or does it suck water in through its mouth and blast it out through the blowhole?
Its mouth does connect indirectly to that breathing channel.
But there is no hard proof it uses that connection to shoot out water.
You would think it would need to flush water out most when feeding, after accidentally swallowing seawater.
Yet sperm whales hunt far down in the depths.
They cannot blow any spray while they are down there, no matter what.
Watch a calm, undisturbed whale with a watch.
You will see the timing of every spray matches exactly the rhythm of its breathing.
So why go round and round with all these logical arguments?

Tell me straight‑what is that spray?
Can you not tell water from mist?

How can you tell for sure if actual liquid water is falling out of it?
Any time you get close enough to see the spray clearly, the whale is churning violently.

If you spot little damp droplets in that cloud, how do you know those are not just steam turning back into liquid mid‑air?
Or those drops might just be seawater trapped inside the dip of the blowhole itself.
Even when a whale glides peacefully across a calm mid‑day sea, its hump baked hot like a desert camel under sunlight.
There is still always a little pool of seawater sitting inside that hollow blowhole on top of its head.
Just like rainwater caught in a rock hollow under blazing sun.
Whalers learn not to get too curious about exactly what whale spray is.
You do not want to lean in and stick your face into that cloud.
You cannot hold a bucket up to this natural fountain and collect a sample to take home.
Even light contact with the outer mist of the spray will make your skin burn and sting.
I knew one man.
He got far too close to a whale’s spray.
Whether for some science experiment or just plain curiosity I cannot say.
The skin peeled off his cheek and arm.
Whalers all consider whale spray irritating, almost poisonous.
They steer well clear of it.
I have also heard‑and I believe it‑if that spray blasts straight into your eyes, it can blind you.
It seems to me the smartest thing any curious person can do is leave that dangerous spray alone.
We cannot prove our theories for certain.

That spray is nothing but mist and steam.

Part of it comes from how grand, how deep‑natured the sperm whale is.
Sperm whales never hang around shallow coastal waters.
Other kinds of whales do that sometimes, but not sperm whales.
They are heavy, immense, deep‑thinking beings.

I sat in my tiny, hot attic room one August noon, after drinking six cups of hot tea.
Lost in heavy thinking, I noticed faint ripples of moisture rising in the air above my head.
My hair stayed damp the whole time I thought hard.
That feels like one more small piece of evidence for my idea.
How magnificent it is to picture that huge shadow gliding peacefully across tropical seas.
Great, gentle head crowned with billowing mist, vapor rising out of its quiet inner thoughts.
Sometimes sunlight catches that mist and paints a rainbow through it.
As if heaven itself has placed its mark upon whatever the whale is thinking.
Rainbows do not appear in clear dry air.

Likewise, through all the foggy uncertainties inside my own head, flashes of spiritual insight will occasionally break through.
They light up my doubts with heavenly light.

Everyone carries doubts.
Many people reject all spiritual ideas entirely.
But very few people hold deep doubts and also genuine inner intuitions together.
Doubting all earthly things, yet still having glimpses of something higher.
That state does not make you a believer, nor does it make you a non‑believer.
It makes you a person who sees both sides fairly.
